1. I think my view of the media has become more cynical. I had the mentality of question everything the media does, and this class has enforced that. You have to be aware of what is being said and that the media doesn't always report the actual whole truth.
2. To me the media was TV, ads, radio, magazines, and newspapers.
3. I think everything is media, because everything conveys a message. Whether people are aware of it or not everything you wear or do conveys a certain message.
4. I would definitely suggest this class to others it would be better if it was more open and not just a capstone class for peace and conflict, that way more people could take it.
5. I felt the strong points in the class was the discussion and the different blog assignments. They gave many different view points and let us discover the media and its different forms. It lets us find out for ourselves the different kinds of media coverage and the different coverage in different countries.
6. I can't really say there was a weak point I really enjoyed this class. Not having a set schedule could be a weak point, but I liked not knowing everything was laid out and not knowing what we would be discussing.
7. I think I am more likely then before to question the things I see on TV and read.
8. I would have said the Colbert Report and those kind of shows, but since we are discussing them on Monday there isn't anything I can think of.
9. No, I don't think I was really aware that what we did was media. I should have as the class went on it was more apparent, but it just didn't come off that way because it was a class and it was interesting. Looking back it's clearly obvious that everything has to do with media and what we did or didn't talk about was up to you and you had the ability to share what you wanted to just like the media can. We were media because we brought different view points and different pieces of news to the class and we all had our own opinions. Again at the time I didn't see it as media, but now I do.

DR. HILDERBRAND'S LECTURE
1. I agree with his definition of cowardice. At this point I can't remember his exact words, but I remember enough. if you always do the what's easy you never have to stand up for anything. Anyone can do what they are told. Those who can stand up and say they have their own ideas and stand alone are very courageous.
2. I think that the media's role should be to find and report the truth. Even though many people would rather leave the news as it is and not hear the truth. I do not believe they fulfill this role. I think that they report their own truth and we have to find out for ourselves what our truth is. I don't think they are close and they have no real reason to change how they report.
3. I do believe everyone thinks that they are telling the truth. I also think that they believe they are trying to be objective. I think they can tell if what they are reporting is objective or if it seems to be slanted one way or another. I don't know if there is any one thing I would want the media to do differently, because eventually it will become slanted again. The best thing to do is to keep an open mind, get news from different places and compare, and look up what you can to see what is really going on in the world.

Spam alot 3
I think you assigned this because it shows how dumb things make the news. And to show us that not all news is about the war and good things that people do. It shows us that there are dumb people out there who get caught doing dumb things and they get to be in the news.
I think people are obsessed with these kinds of things because it makes them feel better about themselves. There are people who do dumber things then you yourself do. And it makes you feel good to know these people exist.
I think they are fairly reported. I'm sure some of the stupid things that happen aren't reported. These stories kind of make the news a little lighter, gives you something to laugh at and make you feel a little better.

Darwin Awards
Two kids 17 and 19 were drunk and stoned and decided to dance on an almost empty oil tank. They also decided it was a good idea to smoke while in the oil tank and it caught on fire and exploded hurling them 150 feet to their deaths.
I picked this one because of what it says after the fact about the rules. Both had not recreated, both were above the age of sixteen. And they thought it was wise while stoned to jump around in an oil tank containing 160 barrels of crude oil.
I think this made the news because it just shows how dumb people can be.

New of the weird article
A persons caught burglarizing a house is forced to clean up the mess they made by the owner who had them at gunpoint.
I picked it because it seemed unusual to make the person who broke into your house clean up the mess they made.
I think it made the news because it seems a bit odd, but if you had the chance to make someone do it you would probably do the same thing.

Video Killed the Radio Star
1. Need for Speed Most Wanted
2. I haven't played it for a while, but it was very fun. I didn't want to talk about Mario even though I really wanted to.
3. It is media because it has different brands of cars and car accessories. There is also other billboards and music on the game.
4. This game sends the message that you need to have the fastest car, be able to piss off the cops and get away to make it to the top of the most wanted list. You have to do something to make them chase you and the higher your status the better the chase. You have to get away otherwise they impound your car for the money you cost the city to pursue you. So i guess the message is to piss off the cops then engage them in a high speed chase and be able to escape.
5. I guess they are negative messages, because if you do this in real life you will get arrested.
6. I think you assigned this because media comes in all forms and we need to be aware of this so we don't fall victim to the media's control of everything. We need to think for ourselves and avoid following the media's influence even in video games.

2. the title says it all. Lets get fucked up and die. I feel that it's trying to influence the listener that your life is not that bad. You should just accept yourself and be who you are.
3. They have some songs like this, more of just accepting yourself and they are kinda weird so it it is OK for you to be a little different.
4. It is serious with some little things just to make you think. The first line lets get fucked up and die I'm speaking figuratively of course. It isn't a literal translation of what they are saying.
5. I think a lot of bands that are just starting out, that haven't sold out or made a sophomore album that was widely popular after a successful first album. It seems to me once a band starts getting noticed by a lot of people they start singing songs that are completely different then the songs their initial fans grew to love. Me personally I think its great if you can put some meaning into your song, but a lot of that kind of music gets left by the wayside because it isn't what you want to listen to. If it is catchy it will get radio play and will stick in your head. If it has a meaning to it there is less chance that it's going to be catchy. I like trying to find new bands because there music isn't tainted. Fall Out Boys Take this to Your Grave is much different then Infinity on High. It is fun to grow as your band grows, but sometimes its disappointing. Good Charlotte is another example their first album was much better than anything they have put out since then. We want music we can sing to and not think about.
6. I'm sure there are plenty of songs that are much more worthy of the topic of meaning and influence, but I was unaware of the meaning of many of the songs we talked about in class. So, in this regard I have no more to add.
7. I think you assigned this because it gets us to think about music in a way we don't normally do. I can listen to music for hours and not really interpret the meaning of what it is I am listening to. Like right now I am listening to music while I write this and I am not really paying attention to the meaning of the words Lyrics are important they make the song, instruments add to the song, lyrics make the song. This shows us another place where a different kind of media is influencing us without us really being aware of it.

Anti-Communist Cartoon
This cartoon was pretty good. People complaining about what is happening to them and a salesman shows up to sell them ISM. They all think it sounds great, but John Q. Public (yes that is his name) wakes up from nap on a near by bench and reads the agreement the salesman wants the other men to sign. He discovers he must give up his freedom and he doesn't want to give this up. Then he has the other men try ISM and they discover that this isn't what they thought it would be. The proceed to chase the salesman and throw bottles of ISM at him. Some of the facts in the cartoon are outdated. I don't think this would work very well at this point in time because Communism isn't a big threat at the current time. I think this would have been a good cartoon at the time, it would give some information and would catch the attention of the people.

Anti-Pornography film
This is an old '60's anti-pornography film. It reminded me of the informative films that the skit comedy shows make fun of. The narrator of the film has one of those voices that make him sound very serious and a little annoyed at what he is talking about. Just the way things are phrased are different. He talks about the pictures in the magazines, and the breast fetish. The evil of the porno industry is brought to the attention of whoever watched this. They also addressed magazines for the homosexual and what was bad about those publications. Porno is taking over the country and the more people that look at it the more perverted our society will become. I can't even imagine what the people who made this film think about some of the magazines and videos they have out now.

1960 Anti LSD film
One of the more interesting films I have ever seen. The whole movie is horrible. The faces the lady makes are just strange. She talks about being jacked up on marijuana so she tried acid. Then she gets a hotdog and sees a face on the hotdog and can't eat it. Then she figures out she is hallucinating and bites down and knows she has killed the person on the hotdog. The whole time there is strange noises and weird images on the screen. I know this wouldn't work today. I also doubt that it worked very well in the '60's. It is a very cheaply made movie.

1. Arby's
2. Shows different types of new sub sandwiches from Arby's. Announcer telling about what kind of bread they are maed with, and that they are available from the drive through.
3. It is trying to get you to buy fresh subs from Arby's rather than Subway or another sub place.
4. No, I don't really want to eat subs from Arby's I would rather have the hot ham and cheese from there.
5. If I did want to get a sub from Arby's I would get one just to try it, but probably only once unless it was really good. Otherwise I'm sticking to the hame and cheese.

The second one is the continuation of the first one.
2. I picked this because I wanted to see a young Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer. I didn't know who Mondale was and I wanted to see the difference between this years Youtube debates and the old ones before I was born.
3. The two are talking about what Reagan has accomplished in his four year term. They are also talking about taxes, inflation, and the differences between the Reagan administration and the Carter administration.
4. They are very opposing sides whatever ones says the other will reply with a statement as to why what their opponent said was wrong and how what they want to do is right.
5. They are debating real issues they are not afraid to address what they want to talk about.
6. They are using real language to talk about real issues facing the American people.
7. Mondale seems more prepared for the debate, but Reagan has reasons why what he has done as president was better for America than the previous administration. I would say Reagan for that reason.
8. I think they covered the issues very thoroughly.
9.I watch some of it, but I find it hard to watch something I can't follow very easily.

The Warsaw Voice
1. The Warsaw Voice
2. Yes the news seems to be objective. From what I read the news seemed to be very objective. There was not any filler in the stories they were mostly facts with a little bit of back story if necessary.
3. I couldn't find any similar stories that they were covering. This site isn't even covering the Gore Nobel peace prize.
4. The only thing I didn't like about the site is that when I tried to click on the side bar it wanted me to sign in to the site.

3. I don't see anything on The Star that is being reported in the other news sites. Most of what is in there is local news. There is some that the Australian news is reporting though.
4. I don't find this appealing or unappealing just shocking that the first two stories on the page are about rape.

Dear America Part 1
The actual video of the explosions and gun fire was really interesting to watch. The letter from the soldier is very powerful. His voice is remorseful and you can tell what he is feeling. It would be hard to have to identify a fallen soldier that you were close to. Having to see those close to you, stuck in a place neither one of you wanted to be, die would be very difficult. I have had very few friends die and I would hate to have to see one of my friends blown up or shot up to a point of being barely recognizable. A lot of people lost people they love, and the soldier who wrote the letter will remember that day forever.
Vietnam through the Things They Carried
The statistics in this one are amazing. The amount of American soldiers killed compared to Vietnamese is just amazing. The pictures of the explosions are very powerful. I have no idea what it's like to be in a war so some of these pictures are just shocking. The soldier that is holding up what is left of a body is really powerful. I also thought the song playing was very appropriate.
Vietnam Blowin in the Wind
This video shows a lot of what the war was like. I think it lets you see a little bit of how it was to be over there fighting. They had to deal with a lot things that most people never had to see. I can't even image what it would be like to live in constant fear of not knowing what was going to happen to you. You can't even trust little kids because they might be the ones that kill you.

Nation's Snowmen March Against Global Warming
I've been building snowmen for at least fifteen years now and I am glad they are finally taking their plight to Washington. Too many times have a seen s perfectly good three piece snowmen melt before it was their time. And snow families being ripped apart by the warm weather. There is no better time then the present for them to be heard. Global warming is facing us all, but unlike you and me there is an immediate effect on the snowmen the the temperatures begin to rise. Something must be done and I for one am proud the snowmen community was able to organize themselves and march on Washington. Could there be a better way for the world to see that Global warming is having an impact not only on humans, but the entire snowmen population itself. The time for action is upon us and I can't wait to join the snowmen in their march for longevity. Nothing brings a smile to my face faster then seeing a snowman family in my front yard gladly waving at all the people passing by.
Scientists Ask Congress To Fund $50 Billion Science Thing
I think it's a good idea to fund a science thing. We need science. The article made a very excellent point with the US leading the way in space with NASA we should also be leading the way in science. And if that means $50 Billion for a science thing then I for one am all for it. What could be better to get us more recognition in the science world then a big science thing. If I found out that Russia or Chine was building a big science thing I would be so jealous. We are a world leader and if we aren't leading in everything then what are we going to call ourselves? The former world leaders. I don't think so, this big science thing is perfect for us to maintain that we get what we want attitude we've all grown accustomed to. Fifty billion is a small price to pay to remain one of the worlds best. If we don't build this science thing I don't know what I would do. The best part of being an American is having great big things we know nothing about. I can't think of one thing I would rather have then a big science thing.
Fig Newtons
I can't believe Fig Newton would stoop this low just to gain a few meagerly sales. I've been saying for years that the Fig Newton is just not that good, and it definitely isn't good for you. Now to think that they would use this type of an advertisement to prey on the souls of the consumers. I just don't know why Fig Newton can't just rely on the classic commercial the other brands of cookies, or pies, or Little Debbie snacks that have worked forever. How did they even get a hold of this secretive information to target this many people at level they can't resist. I will never be able to look at a Fig Newton with respect again. I may never be able to eat the delicious cookie ever again, because I feel so betrayed by them.

Post 2
I agree that the media tends to wait for someone else to make the first move when questioning the American government. They wait until someone prominent questions the actions that are being done until they report on it or make a story about it. It seems easier for the media to question the actions of the government if they report on it in a way that makes it look like someone else had the idea first and they aren't the first ones to bring it up
I think it depends on the company who owns the news company. Different news agencies have different advertisers and owners. I think to some extent these people are in control of what is and isn't put on the news. I think the spread of owners and what does and doesn't get put on different news channels is evened out. What one station can't put on air another station has no problem making it a news story.
I'm finding this whole media influence on the public very interesting. I think if you found someone like Sgt. Atwater who has been to Iraq and wants to talk about the media influence on the war and the feelings the soldiers get from media coverage. Anything about the media influence on the public would be interesting to hear about.

Conspiracy Theories
Conspiracy theories over the September 11 attacks are in my opinion hard to believe. The video about the media implanting the story into the public by who was shown on TV being interviewed by the reporters. The first guy who is talking about the buildings not being able to withstand the impact of the plane and then the fuel weakening the structure, is just guessing based on what he saw. Basically, I could have at the time being a sophomore in high school could have came up with the same conclusion. If I ever saw a plane crash into a building I would assume that building probably isn't going to be able to withstand that impact. If you want to believe the media had the story ahead of time and were ready to put there plan into action that's fine, but I'm going to need a little more proof then a circumstantial video someone decided to make.
Fox news coverage of Sept. 11
The second link to the Fox news coverage was interesting to watch. Watching it took me back to sitting in the classroom watching the footage and having no clue what had just happened. The first plane struck the building and everyone is trying to figure out why. The news anchor and whoever he's talking to are talking about the likelihood that it was an accident. The pilot could have gotten blinded by the sun or some other reason as to why he may have crashed. Then while they are talking about this perhaps being an accident, the second plane comes out of nowhere and crashes into the second tower and any possibility of this being an accident is totally gone. This is definitely a terrorist attack. The whole broadcast is switched to the fact that someone had deliberately attack the United States and speculation begins on who it could possibly be.
September 11
On September 11, 2001 I was walking to math class when I heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center. People in the hall were talking about it, but i had no idea what was going on. Then there was an announcement over the intercom for the teachers to turn the TVs on in the classroom. There they were the two towers both already had been hit by planes. It was so weird to sit there and watch something happen that no one really thought possible.
